Mulch Calculator

Measure your bed, pick a depth, and this tells you how much mulch to buy, either in bulk by the cubic yard or in bags. It is for anyone refreshing flower beds, tree rings or garden paths who wants to avoid a second trip to the store.

Common questions

How deep should mulch be?

About 2 to 3 inches works for most beds. Go thinner around plant stems and tree trunks, and do not pile mulch against them.

Should I buy bulk or bags?

Bulk by the cubic yard is usually cheaper for big areas, and bags are easier for small jobs. The calculator shows both. Pick one when you add it to your list.

How do I convert yards to bags?

One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, so it equals 27 one cu ft bags or about 13.5 two cu ft bags. Pick your bag size from the dropdown and the calculator does the math.

Does it include extra?

No waste is added. Bag counts are rounded up. For uneven ground or old mulch you are covering, buy a little extra.
