Fence Planner

Enter how long and how tall your fence is and get posts, rails, pickets, concrete and screws for a wood picket or privacy fence. It assumes posts every 8 feet, which is the most common layout.

Common questions

What does the fence planner assume?

Posts every 8 feet, 4x4 posts, 2x4 rails (3 per section above 5 feet tall, otherwise 2), 1x6 pickets at about 2 per foot with a small gap, and 10 inch post holes set with 80 lb concrete bags.

Does it count corners and gates?

No. The count is for a straight run. Add one post for each corner and each side of a gate, plus gate hardware.

How deep are the post holes?

At least 24 inches, or one third of the fence height if that is deeper. Your local frost depth or code may require deeper holes, so check before you dig.

When should I hire a pro?

Call one for long runs, steep slopes, rocky ground, or if your area requires a permit or a property survey. Always call 811 to locate buried lines before digging.
